- Abstract
The article explores the quare fugitivity unveiled by French bisexual dancer, singer and actress Josephine Baker in her cultural performance of the banana dance. Topics discussed are Baker as a queer agent of her own self-fashioning based on African American feminist and queer theory, Baker as a French colonial subject with her portrayal of a former circus attraction and cabaret sensation in the musical "Zouzou," and "Zouzou" interpreted as a French imperial ideology and autobiography.
