- Title
A New Source for The Tempest? Richard Cosin’s Conspiracie, for Pretended Reformation (1592).
- Authors
Saunders, Austen
- Abstract
A literary critique of the play "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare is presented, in which the author argues that references made by characters to a shipwreck were inspired by the 1592 pamphlet "Conspiracie, for Pretended Reformation," written by Richard Cosin in response to the 1591 Hacket rebellion against Queen Elizabeth of England. Presbyterian rebel William Hacket's account of a religious experience is described, and prophecies and miracles in both texts are discussed.
