- Abstract
The article discusses the origin of the title of the book "Two Hundred Poosees," by Thomas Palmer. The choice of this title is said to be related to the English government lottery, as the term posy was used for the personal mottos submitted by lottery participants to identify their lottery entry. This factor is mentioned in addition to the fact that Geffrey Whitney's book "Choice of Emblemes and Other Devises" used the more foreign term emblems, while posies was an accepted English term with the same meaning.
