- Title
SIR JOHN DAVIES AND AN ELIZA-BETHAN COURT ENTERTAINMENT.
- Authors
Coltrorpe, Marion
- Abstract
The article focuses on Father Anthony Rivers, a Jesuit priest, who wrote in a letter to overseas Jesuits on March 3, 1601/2. The letter casts light on two letters in the Salisbury Manuscripts at Hatfield House which can now be seen to be connected with one another and to relate to this occasion. Taken in conjunction with them it also casts some light on the career of John Davies poet and Middle Templar. E.K. Chambers drew attention to this letter, and conjectured that it might refer to a proposed masque at Court in April or November 1602. Also in the Salisbury Manuscripts is a letter from John Davies to Sir Robert Cecil.
