- Title
The Enemy at Home: Fratricide and Civil Strife in Machiavelli's Thought.
- Authors
Moudarres, Andrea
- Abstract
An essay is presented in which the author examines the portrayal of fratricide, specifically the murder of Remus by Romulus in Roman mythology, in the work of Italian writer Niccolò Machiavelli. Citing Machiavelli's writings such as "Discourses on Livy," the author argues that Machiavelli does not believe the murder was an indication of the Roman republic's eventual instability. This view is contrasted with that of Saint Augustine in his book "City of God."
