- Abstract
This article aims to characterize the assessment of emotional intelligence by means of the TMM-24 in middle school students in Bogotá. For the characterization of the factors associated with emotional intelligence, we chose a descriptive and cross-sectional quantitative study with a non-probabilistic population sample of students between 15 and 20 years of age from public and private schools. We analyzed the data using descriptive statistics. Students of both sexes showed average, but not optimal, performance with respect to emotional perception; with respect to emotional understanding, the results were in the negative limit for males and adequate, but not optimal, for females; finally, both sexes showed good levels of performance in the use of strategies for emotional self-regulation. However, we found difficulties in the management of moods associated with sadness. Salovey and Mayer's model provides us with a useful means to characterize and understand the basic emotional skills of adolescents, in order to build programs to improve their social, emotional and affective competencies, adjusted to the context and the specific needs of the students.
