- Abstract
The article discusses research being done on the effects of unemployment insurance (UI) entitlement on duration and job search outcome. The research used data drawn from UI systems in five different states to examine how variations in UI benefit levels, maximum weeks of eligibility, and work-test enforcement affect the duration of compensated unemployment and the outcome of job search. The study has shown that higher benefit levels lead to greater duration and higher postunemployment earnings. It also revealed that longer UI entitlement leads to increased unemployment and to very large increases in UI benefit payments.
