- Abstract
The article introduces the finalists and papers presented at the 2004 competition for the Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences. The winning paper reports on the corporate-wide application of optimization to the procurement function at Motorola. Another finalist, Waste Management, examines the design and planning of vehicle routes in a new context of waste collection. The paper from Hongkong International Terminals reports on a multiyear effort, involving a series of operations research projects, to increase capacity and efficiency in the Hong Kong, China port operation. At the turn of the century, Motorola faced a crisis due to economic conditions in its marketplaces, the company needed to reduce costs dramatically and quickly. In 2003, Motorola used the Motorola Internet negotiation tool to source 56 percent of its total spending, with 600 users and a total savings exceeding $600 million. To accomplish its goal, Waste Management has employed management science, starting with an application for optimizing its service routes. In the supply chain, Philips Semiconductors produces and supplies integrated circuits that are used in the optical-storage products produced by Philips Optical Storage.
