- Abstract
Shortly after announcement that the laureate of the 2012 Nobel Prize for literature is Chinese writer Mo Yan, Chinese- and English-speaking internet witnessed an enormous number of mostly negative reactions to the decision of the Swedish Academy, which is generally seen as relatively controversial. Fiery discussions appeared on the „Chinese Twitter“, on the microblog Weibo, where hundreds of thousands of commentaries appeared within just a few hours after the announcement. Renowned scholars in Chinese studies and Chinese dissidents also took part in the discussions. Among the harshest critics of Mo Yan's nomination are the Chinese poet in exile Liao Yiwu, the exile novelist Ma Jian, and a specialist in modern Chinese literature and culture, Perry Link. The aim of this article is to analyze main points of this online debate, in which independent Chinese intellectuals, Western men of letters and sinologists try to find an answer to the question: „Does Mo Yan deserve the Nobel Prize?“
