- Abstract
Introduction: Feeding is a vital need and an activity which is performed throughout the entire life. However, feeding is so much more for an infant: a pleasurable, emotional and physical contact with their mother/caregiver as well as comfort resulting from a successful feeding process and feeling of satiety. Prerequisites of successful feeding from the very beginning are: presence of adaptive and protective reflexes as well as anatomic and functional integrity of different organs and organ systems. In high risk infants there are many possible obstacles from the earliest stages of feeding development. Objective: The aim of this paper is to present the importance of early assessment and intervention procedures performed by a speech and language therapist. These procedures serve the purpose of timely and early recognition and treatment of feeding-sucking- swallowing disorders in high risk infants. Conclusions: The most common feeding problems seen in clinical practice are delayed readiness for oral feeding, suckingswallowing- breathing coordination problems, delayed feeding development, food selectivity, delayed oral-motor skill acquisition, dysphagia, prolonged meal duration and aversive reactions to feeding. Early speech therapy intervention is focused on early evaluation and treatment of feeding disorders as well as on supporting parents/caregivers. Parent counseling and education on optimal feeding techniques is of outmost importance. That kind of support leads to reduction of parent/caregiver's stress, which could possibly affect the quality of parent-child interaction and long-term child development. Parent support also lead to increased parent/ caregiver's self-confidence in providing support in feeding.
