- Abstract
Cichorium intybus is a multipurpose small to medium size perennial herb. It is spread in European and Asian countries, used as forage for livestocks, It is a vegetable plant with high nutrient value, eaten raw as a salad or cooked. It is also used as a substitute for coffee in Europe. It has a medicinal value to cure various diseases. In India this plant is widely cultivated for its medicinal value. It has a great power of hepatoprotective activity and lot of research has been carried out to estimate its medicinal properties. It shows antifungal, antiageing, antiallergic, antibacterial, antivirus, antioxidant, antidiabetic and anticancer properties. Chicory is used as raw material to produce inulin in industry. It is also used in production of cosmetics. Chicory is also a genetically important plant as its two model K59 and C15 is used to investigate cell reactivation and somatic embryogenesis.
