- Abstract
The article focuses on the writings and influence of 20th century political sociologist Seymour Martin Lipset. His academic career highlights which include George Mason University, his election to the position of president at the American Political Science Association and at the American Sociological Association, and his participation in social democratic parties are mentioned. The significance of Lipset's article, "Democracy in Private Government," which was published in this journal in 1952, and his book on union democracy are discussed. His work on the International Typographical Union and on the Canadian Cooperative Commonwealth Federation which was later known as the New Democratic Party is noted.
