- Title
Gases lacrimógenos: fisiopatología, manifestaciones clínicas y manejo de pacientes expuestos en protestas civiles.
- Abstract
Introduction: CThe use of tear gas, o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) and oleoresin capsicum (OC), for the control of civil protests by public order forces, has raised important questions about the legality of its use. This research is carried out in response to the increase in the use of these agents in citizen demonstrations in Chile, which makes it necessary for health personnel to know the effect and know how to approach patients exposed to these irritating gases. Methodology: A bibliographic review was carried out by searching PubMed and SCOPUS databases. Articles published in the last 5 years describing modes of administration, mechanisms of action, clinical manifestations and treatment were prioritized against exposure to CS and / or OC. Development: CS and OC are released through cans, grenades, sprays and tanks. They are capable of activating TRP receptors (pain receptors), causing eye, skin and respiratory irritation, with typically transient disabling symptoms. However, in predisposed subjects, unfavorable environmental conditions and inappropriate use, the clinical manifestations can be serious and even fatal. As a pillar of management, the affected person should be kept away from the source of exposure, also safeguarding the safety of health personnel. There is no antidote for these gases, so treatment is symptomatic. Conclusion: The use of CS and OC can generate detrimental results. Considering the Chilean social context, it is necessary to know these agents, in order to educate the population in this regard and provide adequate care to those affected.
