- Title
Enlightenment in Global History: A Historiographical Critique.
- Authors
Conrad, Sebastian
- Abstract
The article focuses on the global history of the Enlightenment and how historians should look at the eighteenth-century intellectual movement beyond its European origins. The author argues that Enlightenment ideas were transnational, explores how the Enlightenment led intellectuals on both sides of the Atlantic to rethink the challenges of an expanding world, and discusses the essay “Was ist Aufklärung?" ("What is Enlightenment?") written by philosopher Immanuel Kant. He also explores how the Enlightenment was impacted by romanticism.
