- Title
Real Defense spending: a roller coaster ride.
- Abstract
The article reports on the pattern displayed by the total level of U.S. Defense budget authority since World War II. It is noted that the budget peaks corresponded with maritime periods when threats to national security were high, such as during the Korean, Vietnam, and the current Global War on Terror (GWOT). It has been observed that the roller coaster pattern indicates that threats to U.S. national security largely determine the size of real Defense budgets.
