- Abstract
The article provides a summary of the IPA General Meeting that took place on August 9, 2023, in Prague. The meeting was attended by 56 members and 6 non-members. The President, Michael Ashby, discussed various developments within the International Phonetic Association (IPA), including the discontinuation of the IPA Exam and updates to the IPA Chart and publishing model for JIPA. The Secretary, Gerry Docherty, highlighted the impact of the global pandemic on the IPA's activities and reported on the Association's initiatives to support members during this time. The Treasurer, Ghada Khattab, presented an overview of the IPA's financial position, noting steady membership numbers and key sources of income. The Editor, Marija Tabain, discussed the publication of the Journal of the International Phonetic Association (JIPA) and acknowledged the contributions of the editorial team. The Examinations Secretary, Patricia Ashby, reported on the termination of the IPA Examination due to declining numbers and other challenges. The meeting also included the announcement of election results and the address by the incoming President, Katerina Nicolaidis, who emphasized the importance of collaboration and working on initiatives that benefit both the membership and society. The meeting concluded with closing remarks from the President and the announcement of the next IPA General Meeting in 2027.
