- Title
On the Extended Meaning of " ... (-gate)' in Chinese and English.
- Authors
Zhou Cui-ying
- Abstract
The "gate" in "x-gate" has nothing to do with "..." in Chinese, though it originates from the compound form of the "-gate" of English. The meaning "x x..." in Chinese has 4 stages: a scandal in politics, scandal in a certain field, affairs of derogatory sense, events, and double meaning. The structure of "x-gate" has a trend to change from a compound form to an affix with double meaning both in English and in Chinese.
