- Title
EDUCATING THE EYE, HAND, AND HEART AT ST. ANN'S ACADEMY: A Case Study of Art Education for Girls in Nineteenth-Century Victoria.
- Authors
Martens, Margaret Milne; Chalmers, Graeme
- Abstract
This article presents a case study of art education for girls in nineteenth-century Victoria, British Columbia (BC), particularly at Saint Ann's Academy. The authors argue that, within the gendered and class-based society of nineteenth-century BC, it was precisely the life of dedication and service that enabled women to pursue an artistic identity. In turn, art served the Academy by cultivating a distinctive religious identity and promoting the school through the development of this genteel female accomplishment.
