- Abstract
The article explores the interrelations between agricultural development, environmental degradation and women's work in highland Guatemala. Interviews were conducted in 2006 among 20 Kaqchikel Maya women who have been working with the Alliance for International Reforestation (AIR) from one to 10 years. The results of such interviews demonstrated how the agricultural development and environmental degradation affected the work of women in Guatemala. A description of the agricultural development and environmental degradation in the country is presented. The author argued that the overall impact of neoliberal development cannot be understood unless social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects are considered.
