- Abstract
This article discusses the historical course of an Afro-Brazilian religion build from the historical manifestations called catimbó, with colonial roots and considering the debate established around its definition. In this sense, two important moments in the discussion are the works of Câmara Cascudo and Roger Bastide. The first emphasizes the connections between catimbó and European magic and the second leads to an explanation of its historical transformations. The Catimbó is focused here on the most dynamic level of its relations with the mediumistic and Afro-Brazilian field of the northeast, notably with umbanda, candomblé and jurema.
