- Authors
Mullaney, Taylor
- Abstract
The article discusses the land sculpture Opus 40 by sculptor Harvey Fite in Saugerties, New York. The author explains how Fite was inspired by Mayan building techniques due to his experience restoring Mayan architecture in Copan, Honduras, in 1938, along with Fite's work teaching at Bard College (then St. Stephen's College) in New York's Hudson River Valley. The sculptor's use of quarried bluestone from Ulster County, New York, and his construction of a museum display dedicated to quarrymen are explained as well. The work of Opus 40, Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes the sculpture as cultural landmark, is also outlined.
