- Abstract
This article examines a popular journal article published in 1894 by a journalist, author, and antiquarian scholar, Emil Nervander. He compared Jonas Korler’s painting The Canaanite Woman (1772), which was completely unknown to the general public, To Christ and Mary Magdalene (1890) by Albert Edelfelt, a celebrated Finnish artist of the late nineteenth century. Edelfelt’s painting was very timely because it was related to the Finnish and international discussion about describing the essence of Christ. &e author looks at the stages of Korler’s painting in Hauho Church, in inventories by antiquarian scholars, and its transfer to a local museum in the church belfry. &e Finnish Antiquarian Society’s art historical expedition in 1892, whose inventory was particularly important, was led by Nervander. Nervander described old Finnish church art in a way that aroused the interest of the general public. His strategy included surprise, humour, a strong factual base, and most of all, respect for old art. His text includes complex references to Finnish cultural history, contemporary discourses, and beloved landscapes of his youth.
