Overtones: A Collage.
- Authors
Youngquist, Paul
- Abstract
The author reflects on the overtones in the music of trumpeter Don Cherry. He shares insights on the melody of "Lonely Woman," the infant happiness expressed by Cherry's trumpet music, and his playing of the pocket trumpet with his heart in his hand. He talks about the natural horn or embouchure of Cherry when playing the trumpet and his fascination with improvisation and improvised music. He describes the final days of his mother who had not blown his trumpet for years until her death.
