- Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that causes serious health complications and can influence patient quality of life (QoL). Type 2 DM is the most common form, representing more than 90 percent of cases, and its prevalence in Brazil is 7.6%. Depression is a common co-morbidity among people with diabetes, however not much is known about its prevalence in patients with type 2 DM and its relationship with patients quality of life in Brazil. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of depression in patients with type 2 diabetes. This study also evaluated the correlation between QoL and depression in those patients. Outpatients with type 2 diabetes seen at the Universidade Federal do Ceará (northeast of Brazil) were evaluated regarding their QoL, and depression, using the Medical Outcome Study Health Survey 36-Item Short Form (SF-36) and the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) respectively. Descriptive statistics and spearman's test were used to describe the data and to correlate QoL and depression (SPSS 13.0). A total of 99 patients (80 women, 19 men) were evaluated. Mean age was 68.76±5.6 years, duration of DM was in average 12.11±8.18 years, 52.5 % were using insulin, and 55.3% patients had HbA[sub 1c]>7%. About forty percent (40.4%) of patients were depressed (GDS- 15 cut-off point six or more for depression). There was a relationship between QoL and depression (rs= -0,530, p<0.05). Our data suggest a high prevalence of depression in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes of the northeast of Brazil, which is probably associated to a worse QoL.
