The article examines the speeches made by the character Richard II in the play of the same title by William Shakespeare through the use of critical discourse analysis (CDA). It provides a short background of the play including Richard's surrender to his cousin and his decision to give up the throne of his own free will. It notes that the aim of CDA is to uncover the ideological assumptions that are hidden within the text.
