- Title
Trilateral Missile Defense System a Step Towards Asian NATO.
- Authors
Wagner, Jeffrey; Song, Dae-Han
- Abstract
The United States, Japan, and South Korea are set to fully operationalize a missile warning system by the end of December. While the system is justified as a response to North Korea's missile launches, it has raised tensions with China and has been criticized as the "NATOification" of the three countries. The trilateral alliance between the US and its strongest allies in the region lays the foundations for NATO-level military cooperation, posing a threat to China and escalating tensions in the region. The agreement also emphasizes integrated deterrence against China and enhances interoperability between member countries. However, it has led to the consolidation of an opposing bloc consisting of China, North Korea, and Russia.
