- Abstract
Introduction. Osteoporosis is a generalized disease of the skeletal system, which impairs the microarchitecture of bone tissue, compromises resistance and increases fragility. On the other hand, periodontal disease is a immunoinflammatory, multifactorial pathology with high prevalence and is the main cause of dental loss. There is an association between osteoporosis and periodontal disease. Monoclonal antibodies (mAB) are currently implemented, which bind to RANKL and mimic osteoprotegerin. It is important to assess the dental status of patients who will undergo such treatments and know the impact of periodontal therapy, because poor hygiene and dental procedures are risk factors for mandibular osteonecrosis. Clinical case. 62 years old female, who presents over contoured prostheses, maximum depths of 8 mm were reported during periodontal probing, radiographic analysis showed multiple bone defects. A general diagnosis of stage II grade B periodontitis was obtained. During the hygienic phase, the patient reported osteoporosis diagnosis, medical advice was requested and it was agreed with the restorative area, to perform resective surgeries in remnant depths, prior to the administration of mAB, to decrease probing depth and return periodontal stability for the placement of removable prosthesis. Conclusion. According to the bibliography, interdisciplinary treatment is essential to offer comprehensive care, without health risk, return of function and aesthetics to optimize the patient's quality of life.
