- Abstract
"Dementia" refers to a broad neurological syndrome marked by multifaceted intellectual loss. Primary and secondary forms exist. Alzheimer's disease, a primary dementia, is the most important cause of the syndrome. It has a well-defined pathology and a characteristic clinical presentation, but its etiology, or etiologies, remains unknown. No currently available medical therapy can reverse or arrest Alzheimer's disease. However, treatment of associated symptoms and attention to the needs of patients and their families can blunt some of the effects of this devastating illness.
