- Title
When Hell Freezes Over: Mount Hecla and Hamlet's Infernal Geography.
- Authors
POOLE, KRISTEN
- Abstract
The article explores the representation of purgatory in the drama "Hamlet" by author William Shakespeare in order to associate it with the Icelandic volcano of Mount Hecla. The author reflects on the relationship between supernatural geographies and cartographic sensibilities in the early modern period. Topics discussed include locating purgatory as a physical place in geography, differing theological positions on the nature of divine justice, and the inherent political dangers in representing purgatory on the Elizabethan stage during an era of Protestant reform and anti-Catholic fervor.
