- Abstract
This article provides a history of rhythmic gymnastics. Rhythmic gymnastics has grown in popularity after gaining exposure at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, especially among women, spearheading the movement away from co-educational physical education. Dio Lewis, the inventor of rhythmic gymnastics in the 1860s, is profiled and several of quotes attributed to Lewis are presented regarding rhythmic gymnastics. Lewis introduced rhythmic gymnastics at insane asylums as an aid to restore the physical health of the mentally insane.
