- Title
The Concept Of The 6-Day Cycling Show-Circus In The 1930's.
- Authors
Browne, Richard
- Abstract
The article describes the impact of the Depression in Canada on cycling. According to the author, six-day bicycle races around a circular track were not only endurance events for the cyclists, they also served as escapist entertainment for the crowd. Tickets for these "shows" cost fifty cents and spectators could stay as long as they would like. The article focuses on the cyclist William "Torchy" Peden. The author contends that the cycling sport became "circus" entertainment during this period.
