The article discusses the continuous adoption by U.S. state and local governments of new technologies like machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The move was prompted by the high demand for social safety net services like unemployment insurance benefits during the pandemic. Also cited are the data from the Center for Digital Government (CDG) showing that around 34% of counties plan to use new chatbot technology as of October 2021.
