- Abstract
The article discusses the differences in the punishments for civilians and the Han and the Manchus, or the bannermen, which existed in Beijing, China, and the Chinese provinces after 1645. Topics include penal systems during the Shunzhi reign such as the Ming and Qing codes, the Manchu law, and data from routine memorials of the time. Attention is paid to the five punishments including exile, beating with bamboo, and death as well as the privilege of commutation consisting of wearing cangue.
