- Abstract
This letter discusses the history of finger injury compensation in the United Kingdom and compares it to modern-day compensation guidelines. The earliest records of compensation for hand injuries date back to the 600s, with Aethelbert the Anglo, Danish King of Kent. King Alfred of Wessex in the 800s and King Canute further developed and popularized the practice. The study compares the compensation rates for digit amputation in the past to the current guidelines and finds that the thumb receives the highest compensation in both systems. However, there is significantly more compensation given for a ring finger injury in the historical system. The letter suggests that it may be time to reconsider the value of each digit in compensation rates due to advancements in technology and changing demands on the human hand.
