- Abstract
Tautonyms is a binomial zoological name given to an animal in which both parts of the name - genus and species carry the same spelling ex. Chitala chitala. For animals, a tautonym implicitly indicates that the species is the type of its genus. According to latest information available in ICAR-NBFGR database 3157 fish species has been reported from India placed under 48 Orders, 248 Families and 1024 Genus. It includes 34 species considered as tautonyms placed under 10 orders, 22 families and 34 genera. Seven monotypic genus are represented by single species.
