- Abstract
The present study was undertaken to find out the effect of different pre-milking treatment and their combinations on bacteriological quality of raw milk in 70 healthy cross bred cows at SHUATS, dairy farm, Allahabad with treatments as T1 (premilking udder wash with 2% Alum solution), T2 (Clean milker having clean white dress, head covered, hand washed and sterilized), T3 (clean and sterilized milking pail by boiling water), T4 (straining of milk),T5 (pre-milking udder wash with 2% Alum solution as in T1 + clean milker as in T2), T6 (pre-milking udder wash with 2% Alum solution as in T1 + clean milker as in T2 + clean sterilised milking pails as in T3) and T7 the control without any treatment (traditional milking practices). Collected milk samples were analyzed to determine Standard plate count (SPC), Lactic acid bacterial count (LABC), Lipolytic bacterial count (LBC), Proteolytic bacterial count (PBC) and coliforms in milk. Statistical analysis of different bacterial parameters in diferent sanitary treatments on bacteriological quality of raw milk revealed siginificant differences in SPC, LABC, LBC and PBC but shown non significant differences in coliform count in milk. Results of the experiment indicated that the bacteriological quality of raw milk adjudged on the basis of SPC and physiological groups of of bacteria was found best in T6 followed by T1, T3, T5, T2, T4 and T7 (control) indicating thereby superiority of T6 over rest of the sanitary treatments. Therefore it was concluded that to produce milk of low bacterial count the combination of three sanitary practices viz. pre-milking udder wash, clean milker and utensils should be adopted.
