- Abstract
Between the 19th and 20th centuries the political and social Catholicism developed a liberal catholic consciousness with strong reservations towards democratic parliamentarianism in a situation of religious minority within the modern secular states and the ultramontane claims of Rome and of the official doctrine. Often unwittingly this became the driving force behind the modernization of society and the synthesis of both catholic and secular culture which prepared the way to the personalistic turn of the Second Vatican Council. Aware of the complexity of this phenomenon Germany was chosen as the focus of this study especially because of its significant and emblematic experience of the Zentrum.
