- Abstract
The article discusses a telephone survey of animal science faculty in the U.S. to identify current departmental policies and practices related to castration in beef and swine production classes. It describes painful procedures usually performed on animals, the measurement of pain in farm animals and the consequences of pain. It explores ethical dilemmas when teaching painful procedures. It also explains the importance for departments to set policies regarding the issue.
