- Abstract
Objective: It was aimed to examine the illness perception, awareness of gestational glycemic targets and complications of women with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) in reproductive age. Methods: The demographic characteristics and disease history of 48 premenopausal female patients aged 18-45 years were asked with a questionnaire, and then Illness Perception Questionnaire-R (IPQ-R) was administered. In the last part, their knowledge about gestational glycemic targets and complications was questioned. Results: It was observed that the average age of the participants was 29.5 ± 6.6 years, and the diabetes age of 45.8% was 10-20 years. All of them have received diabetes training at least once. It was determined that 43.8% were married, 41.7% had children, and 52.1% had a pregnancy request. As the number of children increased, people thought that they had a serious illness affecting their lives (rho: 0.337, p = 0.019). Frequent hypoglycemia was observed in those who had difficulty understanding the disease and its effects (rho: 0.298, p = 0.040). Those who experience frequent hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia think that diabetes is periodic and that the disease has a good / bad fluctuating course (rho: 0.297, p = 0.040). 11 correct answers (min 3, max 17) were given to 18 questions in the third part. It was observed that the knowledge level of those who were married (n: 13) and those who had a pregnancy (n: 13) were higher (p = 0.001). As the age (rho: 0.32, p = 0.001) and the number of children (rho: 0.048, p = 0.001) increased, the level of knowledge increased. Frequent hypoglycemia (rho: -0.296, p = 0.041) was observed in those with low knowledge. Education level, diabetes year, diabetes education number, control frequency, final HbA1c value were not correlated with the number of correct answers. Conclusion: Despite the fact that more than half of the individuals wanted pregnancy and received multiple education for diabetes, participants' knowledge level for the gestational period remained at the level of 60%. The fact that the knowledge about the gestational period was related to age, pregnancy history, and the number of children showed the effect of experience independent of diabetes education. Having children changes their perspective on the illness, and frequent glycemic variability changes their perception of the illness. As a result; complications that may be encountered and the strict glycemic targets to be applied to prevent them during pregnancy should be emphasized more in the diabetes education of women with T1D.
