- Abstract
The article deals with the digital transformation of companies through enterprise architecture. Various challenges are mentioned, such as the emergence of new disruptive business models, cloud computing, robotic process automation, and the automation of the supply chain. In order to successfully implement the transformation, clear structuring and documentation of business models, processes, and systems are required. Furthermore, it is emphasized that outside-in developed business models and processes are at the center of the transformation. It is shown how digitization changes user behavior and leads to new business models. The method of process modeling is mentioned as an important component for the development of new digital processes. The article describes the importance of enterprise architecture (EA) for companies. EA serves to make the complexity of a company easier to understand and manage through structuring. The ARIS concept is mentioned as an effective approach for EA, as it offers widespread use, many experiences, and available content through reference models, methods, and tools. Companies can benefit from high transparency, a uniform language, and well-documented starting solutions for planned changes. Increased automation of the creation and maintenance of EA can reduce effort. The article describes the development of a dynamic automated enterprise architecture (EA) system called Digital Consulting (DC). The system captures and manages all information generated during project work in digital form. It integrates various tools and enables access to data from SAP, standard planning software, and the companies Scheer GmbH, Scheer PAS GmbH, and imc AG. The DC system serves for better project control and can also be used for the EA concept by using information from modeling work and process mining. It enables transparent documentation of the project progress and the responsibilities of the actors. The article describes the use of digital twins in the corporate context. A digital twin is a digital representation of a part of reality with all its characteristics. In the office environment, digital twins are still uncommon, while they are already widespread in the technical environment. By using digital twins, simulations and tests can be carried out to improve the design of real systems. The article describes the different stages of developing a digital twin and emphasizes the advantages of a photorealistic representation. The discussed EA approach gradually develops to the photorealistic digital representation of the entire company. The framework concept of enterprise architecture is passed on to the digital twin of stage 3 to organize the objects. The transition to stage 3 requires considerable effort, but existing photorealistic digital representations can already be adopted. With techniques such as virtual reality and augmented reality, as well as the vision of the metaverse, the entire company could exist in the future as a visual digital twin that serves as a basis for simulations and decisions.
