- Abstract
Legal developments such as the 1946 Togliatti Amnesty allowed wartime crimes to be swept under the rug, with the result that the structures, and often the people, who had facilitated the violence against Italy's Jewish community remained in place, their crimes essentially censored from public discourse. Additional census data provides a broad understanding of Italy's Jewish community, although several aspects of Pavan's analysis here seem oddly dissonant. With the fall of Italy's Fascist regime in 1943, Italian philosopher and opposition leader Benedetto Croce sought to use his international prestige to help Italy regain its standing.
