- Abstract
The article "Noise, Riot, Conflict, and Crisis: Why the Media Focuses on Noise and Outrage" deals with the effects of changes in the media landscape on content and usage habits. The media is struggling with financing problems, and the internet represents both an opportunity and a threat. Media thrives on excitement and outrage, as attention is the key to their success. The use of media has dramatically changed due to smartphones and social media. Media outlets use certain topics to capture our attention, especially danger, reproduction, and childcare. Tabloid media uses dramatic headlines to attract readers. In the digital age, articles must be individually "sold" and be successful in the attention market. This has led to the tabloidization of the media, as conflict-ridden stories are clicked on more frequently. This can lead to a distortion of reality. The media responds to user behavior and offers more of what is well-clicked. User attention is of great importance to media providers as they rely on selling advertising. Many media outlets have chosen to offer their content for free on the internet, which has led to a migration of advertising revenue and a decrease in the importance of printed newspapers. The media and users are trapped in an attention economy that focuses on conflicts and excitement. There is no clear way out of this spiral, as media financing on the internet continues to be based on attention.
