- Title
Health Coverage and Prenatal Care.
- Abstract
The article reports on the importance of health insurance coverage to prenatal care. Health insurance coverage was the single most important factor in the quality of prenatal care obtained by a group of 202 poor, primarily black women in Detroit; alone, this variable accounted for half of the variance in the adequacy of the women's prenatal care. Five other factors--the women's initial attitude toward the pregnancy, their perception of the importance of prenatal care, how long they waited to tell someone else that they were pregnant, their attitude toward health professionals and how soon they suspected they were pregnant--were also significant predictors. The researchers suggest that "more vigorous, culturally appropriate education programs" might help promote prenatal care among those who do not understand why it is important.
