We Have Seen the Enemy, and He Is Only a "She": The Portrayal of Warriors as Women.
- Authors
Bergmann, Claudia
- Abstract
This article discusses comparisons of ancient warriors in battle to women found in the Hebrew Scriptures. The author uses several texts from the Hebrew Scriptures to identify two types of woman comparisons. Warriors from Israel and Judah are compared to a woman giving birth. Foreign warriors are likened to women, but never in the sense of giving birth. The author contends that both of these comparisons have been seen in a pejorative light, yet only the latter are actually a negative comparison.
