- Abstract
"The Sassoons: The Great Global Merchants and the Making of an Empire" by Joseph Sassoon is a comprehensive exploration of the Sassoon family and their business enterprises, David Sassoon & Co. Ltd. and E.D. Sassoon & Co. The book covers several generations of the Sassoon family, tracing their origins in Baghdad to their major trading ventures in Asia and their final business operations in the Bahamas. The author examines various topics such as migration, globalization, opium trade, family history, Jewish traders, the British Empire, and philanthropy. While the book offers a new perspective on the role of institutions, forms of capitalism, deglobalization, and the rise of regimes unfriendly to private business, it also raises questions about the decline of the Sassoon business empire. The author's use of previously inaccessible archival resources, along with their language skills in Baghdadi Jewish dialect, Arabic, and Hebrew, contributes to a fair and accurate history of the family and their business empire. Although the narrative is complex, focusing on the lives and decisions of family members, the book provides valuable insights for researchers studying global trade, opium trade, family business, and modern Jewish history.
