- Abstract
Cancer and associated treatments often have a significant impact on patients and can manifest in a variety of symptoms leading to negative outcomes on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Quite commonly certain symptoms may occur in conjunction, also referred to as a symptom cluster, which can lead to aggregate burden on the patient. Symptom clusters may occur together as there may be one true underlying etiology, which if identified could provide therapeutic targets for enhanced symptom management. Often improvement in one symptom can improve patient experience with other symptoms eventually leading to reduced overall symptom burden and improved HRQOL. Biomarkers may provide clues to physicians as to what the cause of a symptom or symptom cluster is, as well as to help identify symptoms in non-communicative patients. The objective of the present review was to summarize the available literature regarding biological and genetic biomarkers related to cancer-related symptoms and quality of life (QOL) in cancer patients. A total of 41 studies were included in this review that reported on commonly experienced symptoms in cancer patients including fatigue, depression, anxiety, as well as QOL measures.
