- Abstract
Bruxism is a common behavior in children and adolescents associated with psychosocial, biological and genetic variables, which can promotes several alterations in the structures of the stomatognathic system affecting the quality of life during childhood and adolescence. Objective: the aim of this study was to investigate a possible association between bruxism and genetic polymorphisms in ESR1 and ESR2 in Brazilian girls during puberty. Methods: Structured questionnaire and clinical oral examination were performed to diagnose circadian phenotypes of bruxism in girls at pubertal age (between 8 and 14 years old). Seventy girls were evaluated and 46 of them were selected and distributed into two groups (case-control ratio 1:1). DNA was collected from saliva and the genetic polymorphisms ESR1 and ERS2 were genotyped. Chi-square was used to calculate genotype and allele distribution among the groups. The established alpha was 5%. Results: Sleep bruxism was manifested in 100% of the girls in the case-group and 10 of them reported mixed bruxism (sleep/awake). No association was found between bruxism and polymorphisms in ESR1 and ESR2 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The genetic polymorphisms rs2234693, rs9340799 in ESR1 and rs4986938 in ESR2 were not associated with bruxism during puberty in Brazilian girls, which prompts us to continue investigating to identify the plurality of factors involved in the etiology of this complex behavior.
