- Abstract
In this paper, we focus on translating proverbs from French into Italian. We have established a corpus of sentences that sound like proverbs, taken from Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris. Starting from their linguistic and discursive features, we hypothesize that they include both real proverbs and “pseudo-proverbs”, i.e. proverblike sentences created by Victor Hugo. We have studied seven Italian translations of the novel, published between 1877 and 2003, in order to analyse how all these sentences are translated from French into Italian. Thus, our research deals with two scientific fields: paremiology and translation studies. After explaining how we established our corpus, we will try to make a distinction between proverbs and pseudo-proverbs (§ 1). Then we will show why, from a translational perspective, these two classes of sentences deserve the same treatment (§ 2). Finally, we will focus on the analysis of translation strategies used to recreate them in Italian (§ 3).
