- Abstract
This article explores the complexities and conflicting terminologies surrounding the study of avian moult. It discusses two main nomenclatures, the 'life-cycle' system and the Humphrey-Parkes or 'H-P' system, and argues for a standardized and globally applicable terminology based on scientific evidence. The text also delves into the different patterns of molting in bird species, such as preformative molt and simultaneous molt, and discusses the evolution of molting patterns in different bird groups. It concludes that molting patterns have evolved multiple times within the passerine group, with the simultaneous alternate molt being more common in migratory and resident species in harsh habitats.
