- Abstract
The article offers information on the Jewish community of Tacoma, Washington. As of 1888, Tacoma had 15 Jewish families. Due to the glowing business opportunities in the area, a substantial number of young Jewish men were attracted to the town. The Tacoma Relief Society was established by the Tacoma Jewry in response to the Russian persecution of Jews. Participated by Jews and Christians, a community protest was held against Russian barbarities on January 18, 1891. The Congregation Beth Israel was established in the spring of 1892 with Sol Jacoby as the founding president. As of July 1892, membership reached to 60 members or family units. A three-story building for the congregation was completed in 1893. In 1960, a merger was made between Temple Beth El and Beth Israel.
